CustomerGenius is a Shopify app that automatically detects and prevents discount code abuse by identifying customers who create multiple email accounts to exploit discounts — then cancels and refunds those orders for you.
We built it after experiencing the problem ourselves. Running Shopify stores, we offered generous first-time customer discounts to drive acquisition. Over time, we noticed a pattern: certain customers were placing large orders, filing chargebacks, abusing our customer service team, and then reappearing with a new email address to do it again.
Shopify's built-in discount system only checks for unique email addresses — it has no way to detect that the same person is behind multiple accounts. We looked for a solution and found nothing that addressed it directly. So we built one.
How it works
Every time a new order comes in using a monitored discount code, CustomerGenius scores it against all prior orders that used the same code. It compares email addresses, phone numbers, billing and shipping addresses (both exact and fuzzy), and customer names. Orders that exceed your configured fraud threshold are flagged — and optionally cancelled and refunded automatically.
What we've seen
Across our merchant base, roughly 1% of orders come from customers using multiple email accounts to exploit discounts. Merchants using CustomerGenius recover an average of 11x their monthly subscription cost in saved discounts. And 38% of customers who are caught repurchase at full price — turning a fraudulent customer into a profitable one.

Who we are
CustomerGenius is operated by homedoctor LLC, based in New York City. We're a small team of e-commerce operators who continue to run Shopify stores alongside building this product. Every feature we ship is one we've personally needed.
